Spring Cleaning Checklist for South Cambridgeshire Homes

A practical room-by-room spring cleaning checklist for homes in South Cambridgeshire. Tips for period properties, eco-friendly products, and when to call a professional.

In short: A thorough spring clean covers every room — kitchen appliances inside and out, bathrooms tile-to-ceiling, bedrooms including mattress rotation, and all the high and hidden surfaces that winter lets you ignore. Allow a full day for a 3-bed home, or bring in a professional for a 4–6 hour deep reset.

There’s a moment every spring when the sunlight hits your windows at just the right angle and you suddenly notice everything — the dust on the skirting boards, the grime behind the hob, the cobwebs in the corners that winter let you ignore. That’s the moment you know it’s time for a proper spring clean.

Whether you tackle it yourself or bring in help, this room-by-room checklist will make sure nothing gets missed.

Kitchen

The kitchen is where spring cleaning makes the biggest visible difference. Start here for maximum motivation.

  • Oven: Pull out the racks and soak them. Clean inside the oven — a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water left overnight works well, or use a dedicated eco-friendly oven cleaner.
  • Fridge and freezer: Empty completely, check dates, wipe all shelves and drawers. Defrost the freezer if it needs it.
  • Behind and under appliances: Pull out the fridge, oven, and washing machine. You’ll find crumbs, dust, and possibly a missing spoon.
  • Cupboard interiors: Empty each cupboard, wipe the shelves, check for expired items, and reorganise as you put things back.
  • Extractor hood and filter: Soak the filter in hot soapy water. Wipe the hood — it collects grease you can’t see until you look.
  • Sink and drains: Deep clean the sink, run a drain cleaner (vinegar and bicarbonate of soda work for maintenance), clean around the base of taps.
  • Bin area: Clean the bin itself — inside, outside, and the surrounding floor area.
  • Surfaces and tiles: Degrease splashback tiles, clean grout if needed, polish worktops.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms need attention to the details that daily cleaning misses.

  • Grout: Scrub tile grout with a brush and appropriate cleaner. This alone can transform how a bathroom looks.
  • Showerhead: Soak in white vinegar overnight to dissolve limescale. South Cambridgeshire has hard water, so this makes a real difference.
  • Behind the toilet: Clean the area behind and around the base of the toilet — easily forgotten, never unforgotten once noticed.
  • Extractor fan: Remove the cover and clean the fan blades. A dusty fan doesn’t extract properly.
  • Medicine cabinet: Check expiry dates, clean the shelves, reorganise.
  • Towel rails and hooks: Wipe down, check for mould behind wall-mounted rails.
  • Sealant: Check silicone sealant around the bath and shower for mould. If it’s beyond cleaning, it may need replacing.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are about air quality and surfaces.

  • Mattress: Strip the bed completely. Vacuum the mattress, spot-clean any stains, and air it if possible. Rotate or flip according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Under the bed: Vacuum thoroughly. This is where dust accumulates most.
  • Wardrobe interior: Wipe shelves and rails, sort through seasonal clothes, donate what you don’t wear.
  • Curtains or blinds: Wash curtains or vacuum blinds. In older properties with heavier curtains, a good shake outside and a steam can work wonders.
  • Light fittings: Dust lampshades and ceiling lights. Dead insects in ceiling bowls are a spring cleaning classic.
  • Radiators: Dust between and behind radiator panels. A radiator brush makes this much easier.

Living Areas

  • Sofa and soft furnishings: Vacuum all cushions — remove them and clean underneath. Check for coins and crumbs.
  • Windows: Clean inside and out if accessible. Clean window sills and tracks.
  • Skirting boards: Wipe all skirting boards. A damp microfibre cloth picks up dust better than anything.
  • Bookshelves and display areas: Take everything off, dust the shelf, clean items, replace.
  • Fireplace: If you have a wood-burning stove or open fire — common in Linton and village properties — clean out thoroughly once the heating season ends. Consider a chimney sweep.
  • Carpets: Deep clean or steam clean. High-traffic areas benefit enormously.
  • Doors and switches: Wipe all door handles, light switches, and socket surrounds.

Hallway and Entrance

The first thing you see when you come home. Give it proper attention.

  • Front door: Clean inside and out, polish hardware.
  • Shoe storage: Sort, clean, and reorganise.
  • Coat hooks and surfaces: Wipe down, declutter.
  • Floor: Deep clean whatever surface you have — tiles, stone, wood. Entrance floors take the most punishment.

Tips for Period Properties

Many homes in South Cambridgeshire — particularly in villages like Sawston, Linton, and Saffron Walden — have features that need specific care during a spring clean:

  • Flagstone floors: Use pH-neutral cleaners only. Acidic products (vinegar, lemon) can damage natural stone over time.
  • Exposed beams: Dust with a soft brush. Don’t use wet cloths on untreated timber.
  • Leaded windows: Clean gently with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive products that could damage the lead.
  • Aga cookers: Clean the enamel with specialist Aga cleaner, not standard oven products.
  • Original fireplaces: Use appropriate cleaners for the material — stone, cast iron, and tile all need different treatment.

When to DIY vs. Call a Professional

Spring cleaning is satisfying work, but it’s also time-consuming. A proper spring clean for a three-bedroom house takes 8–12 hours if you’re being thorough.

Consider calling a professional if:

  • You don’t have a full weekend to dedicate to it
  • Your home has features that need specialist care
  • You want the oven, windows, or carpets done properly
  • You’d rather spend your spring weekend doing something else

A professional deep clean costs less than you might think, and the results are noticeably better than a DIY effort — particularly for the jobs that need specialist products and equipment.
