What Does a Professional Deep Clean Include?

What's the difference between a regular clean and a deep clean? A room-by-room breakdown of what a professional deep clean covers and when you need one.

In short: A professional deep clean covers every room in detail — inside appliances, behind furniture, grout scrubbing, skirting boards, and high surfaces not reached in a regular clean. It typically takes 3–8 hours depending on the size of your property and resets your home to a like-new standard.

You keep your home reasonably tidy. You clean regularly — or you have someone who does. But every so often, you look at the top of a kitchen cupboard, the inside of an oven, or the grout between the bathroom tiles and think: this needs more than a regular clean.

That’s what a deep clean is for. Here’s exactly what it involves, how it differs from a regular clean, and when you should book one.

Deep Clean vs. Regular Clean

A regular clean maintains your home — hoovering, mopping, wiping surfaces, cleaning bathrooms and kitchens, keeping things tidy and hygienic. It covers the surfaces you see and use daily.

A deep clean goes further. It targets the areas and tasks that a regular clean doesn’t have time for — inside appliances, behind furniture, detailed grout and tile work, high surfaces, and the accumulated grime that builds up slowly over time.

Think of it this way: regular cleaning keeps your home at 80%. A deep clean resets it to 100%.

Room-by-Room Breakdown

Kitchen

The kitchen is where a deep clean makes the most dramatic difference. Regular cleaning keeps surfaces usable, but grease, limescale, and grime build up in places that need periodic attention.

  • Oven: Full internal clean including racks, trays, door glass (inside the glass panels too), and oven cavity. This is one of the most requested individual tasks.
  • Hob and extractor: Degrease the hob, clean burner caps/rings, degrease and clean the extractor hood and filter.
  • Fridge and freezer: Empty, wipe all shelves and drawers, clean door seals, exterior.
  • Dishwasher and washing machine: Clean drums, door seals, detergent drawers, filters. These harbour mould and bacteria.
  • Inside cupboards: Empty, wipe shelves, clean fronts and handles.
  • Behind appliances: Pull out the fridge, oven, and washing machine to clean behind and underneath.
  • Splashback and tiles: Degrease tiles, clean grout, polish taps and sink.
  • Bins: Clean inside and out.
  • Small appliances: Kettle descaled, toaster crumb tray emptied, microwave inside and out.

Bathrooms

  • Tiles and grout: Detailed scrubbing of all grout lines. In South Cambridgeshire’s hard water area, limescale builds up on tiles faster than in soft water regions.
  • Shower screen and enclosure: Full descale and polish. Glass screens restored to clarity.
  • Showerhead: Removed and descaled if possible, or soaked in situ.
  • Bath and basin: Thorough clean including taps, overflow, and plug holes.
  • Toilet: Full clean including behind, around the base, seat hinges, and under the rim.
  • Sealant and silicone: Cleaned and treated for mould.
  • Extractor fan: Cover removed, fan blades cleaned.
  • Mirrors and glass: Streak-free clean.
  • Cabinet interiors: Wiped and organised.

Bedrooms

  • Mattress: Vacuumed, spot-cleaned for stains.
  • Under beds and furniture: Thorough vacuum and dust removal.
  • Wardrobe and drawer interiors: Wiped down.
  • Light fittings: Dusted and cleaned, including ceiling fixtures.
  • Radiators: Dusted between and behind panels.
  • Curtain rails and blinds: Dusted and wiped.
  • Skirting boards: Full wipe.

Living Areas

  • Skirting boards and door frames: Full wipe, every room.
  • Light switches, sockets, and handles: Cleaned and sanitised.
  • Window sills and tracks: Cleared, wiped, tracks cleaned out.
  • Internal windows: Cleaned with frames and seals.
  • Behind and under furniture: Moved where safe to do so, vacuumed and cleaned.
  • Soft furnishings: Vacuumed thoroughly, cushions removed and cleaned underneath.
  • Lampshades and decorative items: Dusted.
  • Fireplaces: Cleaned out (if not in use), surrounds wiped and polished.

Hallways and Stairs

  • Banisters and handrails: Wiped down.
  • Stair carpet: Thoroughly vacuumed including edges.
  • Front door interior: Cleaned including handles and letterbox.
  • Shoe racks and storage: Cleaned and organised.
  • Ceiling cobwebs: Removed throughout the house.

How Long Does a Deep Clean Take?

It depends on the size of your home and its current condition. As a general guide:

  • 1–2 bed property — 3–5 hours
  • 3–4 bed property — 5–8 hours
  • Large period property — 8+ hours

Properties that haven’t been deep cleaned for a year or more, or homes with particular challenges (hard water limescale, post-renovation dust, pet hair accumulation), may take longer.

When Should You Book a Deep Clean?

Seasonally — Most people deep clean in spring, but autumn is equally valuable. Our spring cleaning checklist covers a room-by-room approach. Cleaning before you close up the house for winter means you’re not sealing in six months of summer dust and pollen.

Before hosting — Guests coming to stay? A deep clean before they arrive means you’re not worrying about the state of the spare room.

After building work — Renovation dust is fine, persistent, and gets everywhere. A post-build deep clean is essential to make your home liveable again. Properties in Sawston — particularly newer developments like Tudor Meadow — often benefit from this.

Moving in — Even if the previous occupants cleaned (see our end of tenancy guide), a professional deep clean before you unpack gives you a genuinely fresh start. Common across rental properties in Saffron Walden and Haverhill.

After illness — A deep clean after someone in the household has been unwell sanitises surfaces and resets the home hygienically.

When regular cleaning isn’t enough — If you’ve noticed grime building up despite regular cleaning, it’s time for a reset.

What a Deep Clean Doesn’t Usually Include

For clarity, standard deep cleaning typically doesn’t cover:

  • External window cleaning — this usually requires different equipment and access considerations
  • Professional carpet or upholstery shampooing — this is a specialist service, though we can recommend providers
  • Ceiling or wall washing — spot-cleaning marks is included; full wall-washing is a separate job
  • Decluttering and organising — we clean surfaces and spaces, but sorting through belongings is down to you
